Smogathon Global Competition 2017 for smog-fighting innovations

Over 92% of the world’s population inhales unhealthy air and over seven million people worldwide die prematurely every year because of smog

Smogathon is an initiatives that was born in Cracow in 2015. It aims to fight the air pollution through technology. In 2017, once again they decided to take things to the next level by organizing the third edition of Smogathon in the form of a truly international contest with semi-finals in five locations around the world: Warsaw (Poland), London (UK), Berkeley (USA), Bangalore (India) and Hong Kong (China), and a final in Krakow (Poland).

Green City Solutions, last year winner, approached the problem of air pollution by combining a vertically installed moss culture with Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology. The product, called the “CityTree”, combines specific plants that eat particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide and ozone – offsetting 240 t of CO2e/year in total. The plant filter has the same effect as 275 urban trees, but requires 99% less space.

This years edition will unite 120 start-ups from all over the world to compete for $25,000 in cash and $75,000 as a contract to implement their idea in Krakow
